Make Easy and Efficient and Powerful, PLEASE

Almost two years ago, I attended a trade show. This show was different than most. The attendees were vendors, consultants, and association executives. All were there to find out the “State of the Union” - where the association management system (AMS) industry was and what direction this world of ours was moving toward.


At one point, a consultant went on stage to talk about the future and how technology will affect their groups. Imagine a room full of 200+ AMS professionals hearing from the speaker “I am going to show you the two companies that are stirring the pot and causing the biggest hurdles in your professional lives."  


At this point the presenter clicked a button and advanced the screen of their slide show. The corporate logos of Amazon and Facebook appeared. More than half the people I sat with chuckled and the other half rolled their eyes. My reaction was different. Always loving a good story, I became very curious and thought, “how are these pieces going to line up?”.


Consider, how quickly and easily things get done on Amazon when you search and order, manage photos, stream music, and download books. With Facebook, how much easier it is to stay in touch and see what is happening in the lives of your 1,000 closest friends (and all their photos)?


Then came the cherry on top. These two organizations were setting the bar regarding what someone’s online life can be. 

Why isn’t everything we touch online this simple and available? Can’t we ensure the AMS we use is as easy as ordering on Amazon for things like signing up for new membership, registering for an event, updating your contact information, making a partial payment, managing a committee, blasting out email, and simply running your organization?


Two of the biggest challenges from customers who consider the ClubExpress AMS are “what can we do to have more active members” and “how do we attract new younger members?” 


My response is telling this experience at the trade show. And when I’m finished, I usually hear:

“OK – I now get it.”
