Building Member Passion and Leadership

A client yacht club called about a one and a half years after they rolled out ClubExpress and their first words were “Do I have a story for you.” You now have my full attention.

They had been worried about the sluggish member attendance and a seeming lack of camaraderie. Being active users of ClubExpress’s myriad features, they used the survey module to ask their members a question: “What (outside of boating) is your passion?” Their answers included bike riding, BBQing or grilling, wine tasting, hiking, and more.

The leadership put those results into action suggesting to members: “We would like members to put a bike ride together, and maybe we can have a combo event for BBQ with a wine tasting. Put a plan together and let’s meet to review.”

The board stood back to watch members take ownership of their respective events and plan these events from A-Z.

What they saw were formerly lackadaisical members who were now highly invested—and potentially their next membership director, treasurer, communications manager and event director. In other words, their next generation of leadership.

I asked them what they learned from their experience. Their reply:

“The talent and passion are there; you just have to know how to dig for it.”
